The Breaker’s Concubine by Ann Mayburn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’ll admit it. The cover got me. I’m not too proud to say it.
Quite often when I read erotic stories I’m underwhelmed with the plot. I mean I understand that it isn’t supposed to be plot heavy, because that’s not the point, but I like to have some reason for the story to exist beyond the sex. In this regard, The Breaker’s Concubine is more fulfilling than most. Maybe it’s because I’m craving Sci-Fi lately, but I really enjoyed the political space intrigue aspect of this story.
The other point I found appealing was that it didn’t seem like I was being written down to just because it was an erotic story. Would I be too pretensions if I said it seemed like “smart” smut? Probably, but I’m going to say it anyway.
The relationship progressed a touch fast, for me. Our hero and heroine went from wanting each other to wanting to die without each other a bit too quickly for my tastes, although I recognize that’s completely subjective.
The Breaker’s Concubine is both steamy and interesting. I heartily suggest picking it up.
PS – Ann Mayburn found me on Twitter after I posted that review to Goodreads and thanked me for referring to her story as ‘smart smut,’ so I guess it wasn’t too pretentious after all! 🙂
