Holy Crap, I’m Going To Be A Full Time Writer

I found out just last week that I’ll be transitioning to full time writing a year sooner than I expected. This is both really great and really scary news for me. It means I finally have a fire under my butt to get me to treat writing as a real career rather than just something fun that I do. It also means that holy shit I need to figure out how to make writing work as a real career.

There are hurdles to overcome, certainly, but most of all I need to figure out how to be patient with the road ahead. I know me. After a few months have gone by and I still haven’t made anywhere near my current salary, I’m going to want to give up on this crazy dream that I have. I can’t let myself do that.

My goal is easy enough to figure out, laughable though it seems now: make as much money writing as my current salary. Now I just have to figure out how to make that goal happen in real life. To start with, I’ve divided the top-level goal into subsections for all the different ways I can make that money: fiction, non-fiction, copy-writing, and copy-editing. Under each of these sections I have a list of possible prospects, stories I’ve already written, or stories floating around in my head that I can finish quickly and get into the rejection rodeo. I also have a list of things I can do to generally make my writing better or help my career that don’t directly produce any money, but will eventually pay dividends.

Part of that ‘other’ list involves redesigning this website to be a little more professional and less bloggy. That change will happen some time in the next few weeks, so don’t be surprised if something stops working in that time frame. Hopefully there will be very little interruption and all you’ll notice is the new and beautiful website on the other end.

Along with that I’m going to be updating much more often. Yes, I know I’ve said that before, but this time I really mean it. More random rants, more writing stuff, more speculative media reviews, more lamentations about characters that don’t want to cooperate with me, just more of everything really. I haven’t decided yet exactly what the new posting interval will be, but I’ll nail it down in the next couple of weeks.

So, exciting times are ahead! If my cross country move doesn’t generate a nervous breakdown, this whole full-time writing thing probably will. Stay tuned to find out!

Hearts and puppies,

  1. How awesome! Congrats and good luck!

  2. congratulations on all your steps forward
    Love Mom

  3. Honestly I think a lot of writers do just fine with the bloggy format… it helps to get to know them as people, not just AUTHORS, you know? 🙂

As someone who wants to someday be a full-time writer, I look forward to seeing how you pull it off! 😀

  4. Thank you Mary and my wonderful Mom-in-Law. 🙂

Jesse, I’ve gone back and forth on the blog style before. I’m definitely going to keep the blog as a major part of the site I just thought it was important to have a little more professional appearing front end. Thank you for the encouragement.
