Starting Over

I’ve written around 30k words so far this year. My goal was 300k for the year. Clearly I am no longer going to make my pretty aggressive goal. That’s fine. I’m not even going to worry about it. Those of you who know me even a little know that’s not true, but let’s suspend disbelief for a moment.

What have I done right? I’ve gotten 2500+ words on the board every month, which is better than last year. I got my second book ready for publication. Announcement very soon on that, I promise! I finished a novelette that I’ve been trying to finish off for about a year now. All of these things are great. I’m jazzed by what I’ve gotten done and I’m thrilled at the prospect of the exciting projects I have ahead of me!

I’ve decided since whatever I was doing was clearly not working, I’m going to start this year over. I’m not going to worry about words anymore. I’m going to worry about projects and the commitments I’ve made. So, to that end, let’s look at what I intend to accomplish:

  • I’m going to submit the aforementioned novelette to Writers of the Future this quarter. I really am. It’s pretty close to ready and it’s one of my favorite stories to date.
  • I’m going to finish Broods book two. I know a lot of you are waiting on it and I’ve promised it to you. It may not make late summer as I’d originally intended, but I’ve got about 30k words done right now and it will be my focus until my next editing appointment coming up in mid-July. My first draft will be done by then. It will or I won’t sleep.
  • I’m going to finish my collaboration work on my book for the Drifting Isle Chronicles. My deadline is September because that’s when my next editing slot is coming which will give me time to get it edited before our year end deadline. Again, this isn’t negotiable. I’ve made a commitment to four other authors and I don’t intend to miss it. (Here’s a plug for an interview regarding the project with one of my fellow authors on Shared Story Worlds.)
  • I’m going to finish the second related novelette in my trio. The world of my novelette, which I can’t give you any real details on because of the rules of WotF, is one that I love and I’ve had several ideas on additional stories that will happen in the same world. I hope to write a handful of stories, sell them to a few different publications, and then when the rights revert back to me put them together as a collection. This group of short stories is also the subject of my Master’s Project for my MFA. I’m on track for graduation in a year and I’m not going to screw that up by not finishing my stories!

So, there you have it peeps. Those are the projects I have committed to finishing this year and I fully intend on coming through. Exciting times are afoot and I’m happy to have you here along for the ride with me. 🙂

Hearts and puppies,

  1. Wow, you’re undertaking so many things at one time! WotF sounds really interesting, but I’m still most excited for Broods 2!! Haha, keep calm and all the way, Coral!

    • I sincerely work best with firm timelines and multiple projects. I don’t know why that is. Maybe I just have a tendency to procrastinate.

  2. Sounds like you’ve got some huge projects there, so good luck with them! It’s fantastic you’re doing so much writing. I really need to get back to mine.

    • Get to writing. That’s an order! 😉

      And thanks for the encouragement.
