Author Interview with K. S. Brooks

Today I host an interview with author K. S. Brooks. She’s here to talk about her book, Night Undone.

Here’s the blurb:

Former Special Agent Kathrin Night is not adjusting to civilian life. More than a year after her career-ending injury, she still can’t get the hang of it. This is wearing thin on her lover, Russian FSB Agent Aleksey Khovechkin, who tricks Kathrin into seeing a psychiatrist specializing in post-military/espionage patients. The therapy doesn’t go exactly as Aleksey hopes, but before he can react, Russia recalls him to make him an offer he can’t refuse. Before his departure, Aleksey reveals his deepest, darkest secret to Kathrin. Had he, in fact, used her to escape his duties in Russia, or was his allegiance to her genuine? Determined to see justice served, Kathrin hatches a scheme to help Aleksey while at the same time reviving her career in espionage. The Vancouver Winter Olympics could be the perfect venue for her plan, but can she pull it off without destroying their relationship, causing an international incident, or getting either of them killed?

1. What’s the first word of your book? (You can exclude articles, pronouns or prepositions.)

Kathrin.  (Kathrin was awakened by the warmth of Aleksey’s mouth on her pelvis.)

2. Tell me something about your book that I can’t find in the blurb.

Night Undone is Special Agent Kathrin Night’s personal journey.  She is forced to face life as a civilian – the one thing she fears the most.  While there is suspense and some romance, I really see Night Undone as a character-driven drama.

3. In one word, describe your main character. (You can expand afterwards, but limit your initial response to one word.)

Paradoxical.  Expansion:  Special Agent Kathrin Night is smart, strong, stubborn, gorgeous, talented and deadly – but fairly inept at dealing with personal issues and relationships.  She never had a need for those, so she closed off that part of herself to focus on being a more effective anti-terrorist agent.

4. Where does your book take place? Tell me about why you picked that location.

Night Undone takes place in two locations:  the fictional town of Freedom in the wilderness of Northeastern Washington State, and in Vancouver, BC Canada during the 2010 Winter Olympics.  The former was a natural place to send Special Agent Night as she recuperated from her career-ending injury.  Vancouver – well that sort of fell into my lap being within driving distance from her “hide-out” and a perfect opportunity for her to “sell” security services.

5. Tell me about your favorite character that you’ve written.

Special Agent Kathrin Night really has to be my favorite, since I created her in 1986.  But since I discuss her above, if you don’t mind, I’d like to use this opportunity to talk about her partner, Agent Aleksey Khovechkin (Khitrov).  Aleksey is funny, witty, and charming.  He constantly trips over American terminology with his thick Russian accent.  He’s built like a brick house; his strong jaw, teal eyes and black hair are striking.  *sigh*  Aleksey’s also got a secret past, a temper, and some other issues.  After all, is there really such a thing as the perfect man?

6. What’s your favorite verb?

Write.  It’s what I live to do.

7. What’s the last book you read?

Joe Café by JD Mader.

8. Who was your favorite fictional character as a child?

Bagheera, the black leopard in Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book.”

9. Tell me about an event that contributed to your decision to become a writer.

I’d always wanted to be a writer, but I guess completing my first novel at age 15 gave me the sense that I could actually do it.

10. What would you tell past you, if you could send a letter back in time?

I’d tell past me to eat less junk/fast food, not to tear up letters from former lovers and to work less.  Those 70 hour weeks working for “the man” didn’t end up getting me anywhere.
