Author Interview with Jaz Primo

Today I have for you an interview with author Jaz Primo as part of the Romancing Your Dark Side Book Tour. He has two books out right now in The Sunset Vampire Series. Less babbling from me, more talking to the author:

1.         What’s the first word of your book? (You can exclude articles, pronouns or prepositions.)

2.         Tell me something about your book that I can’t find in the blurb.

The two central characters in my novel, Katrina and Caleb, are each saddled with diametrically opposite weaknesses. Therefore, each character weilds the unique qualities or characteristics that the other needs to “heal” and resolve their own internal conflicts.

3.         In one word, describe your main character. (You can expand afterwards, but limit your initial response to one word.)

Katrina: “Captivating” She is a strong, independent alpha heroine who embodies most of the qualities of a perfect woman in Caleb’s mind. She is unlike anyone that he has ever encountered, and he is literally captivated by her.  — Caleb: “Selfless” When Caleb commits to loving someone, certainly in this case Katrina, he dedicates his love, attention, and devotion to her selflessly. Though Caleb is a beta male, he is willing to lay his life down for her.

4.         Where does your book take place? Tell me about why you picked that location.

Sunrise at Sunset primarily takes place in Atlanta, Georgia. I wanted a centralized location that was a major metropolitan area but had access to multiple types of geographic formations such as dense forests, mountains, and the ocean. Also, a rich historical environment was a must.

5.         Tell me about your favorite character that you’ve written.

Oh, that’s a hard one. Ask a parent who their favorite child is, why don’t you? I’ve had a lot of unexpected fun with a vampire in my series named Paige. She’s such a hoot, and I fell in love with her when I least expected it.

6.         What’s your favorite verb?

7.         What’s the last book you read?

If you mean read as in “completed” then it was Black Powder War (Temeraire Series #3) by Naomi Novik. However, the novel that I’m actively reading is Halfway to the Grave (A Night Huntress Novel #1) by Jeaniene Frost. It’s very good, and I’m about a third of the way through it right now.

8.         Who was your favorite fictional character as a child?

My favorite childhood fictitious character is still one of my favorite’s today: Doctor Who. The Doctor was/is simply amazing! The character is unimaginably intelligent, witty, and noble, no matter which actor is portraying him. And hey, who wouldn’t want to zip around the universe in the Tardis with a Timelord?

9.         Tell me about an event that contributed to your decision to become a writer.

When I was in elementary school, around fifth grade, my home room teacher would allow me to read stories that I created with the rest of the class. It was the earliest that I can remember anyone embracing my creativity and allowing me to share my imagination with others. Ever since then, I’ve loved to write and share my thoughts and ideas with others. However, as a relatively shy person, it’s still no less scary and nerve-wracking in my hope that what I share will be positively received by others.

10.       What would you tell past you, if you could send a letter back in time?

I would tell myself: “(1) Don’t be afraid to let loose and be yourself. Crippling shyness can cause you to miss out on so many enjoyable social experiences. (2) Don’t fear failure to the point that it prevents you from taking a chance on something potentially enriching or adventurous. (3) You don’t always have control over the things that happen to you, but you always have control over how you choose to react to them. (4) Life may be a journey, but if you’re not enjoying the ride then why are you making the trip?”

My sincere thanks to Coral for the wonderful opportunity to appear on Chaos and Insanity. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this interview! In closing, I’d like to offer a quick teaser for my debut Sunset Vampire novel, Sunrise at Sunset.

When is a bloodthirsty predator the best protection against a psychotic killer?

When the predator is both a vampire…and the woman you love.

“We vampires are focused and tend to shape our own realities.”

My name is Katrina Rawlings, and I am a vampire. I declare that with neither pride nor ego. I am simply nature’s most dangerous predator. On occasion, it’s a very valuable quality. It helped me protect Caleb Taylor one day when he was very young. But that single, traumatic day is behind him now; wiped from his memory, or so I hope.

Caleb has finally matured into a rather striking young man, and believe me, I like what I see. I’ll readily admit that there are issues for us to confront and overcome, though a sense of mutual commitment isn’t one of them. I’m feeling hopeful for our future together, in fact. But an adversary from my past has returned to haunt me, and she’s trying to get back at me through Caleb. That was her first…and last…mistake. I’ll protect my Caleb at all costs, and I’ll make her regret the day she was born.

So, I suppose that I’m not just a vampire. I’m about to become someone’s worst nightmare!
